Non-alcoholic drinks bottler Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) has announced the launch of a new eco-friendly glass bottle for its brands Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite in Edo state.

The Ultra glass bottle requires around 14% less raw materials and energy compared to regular glass bottles. It is protected by full-depth plastic, avoiding breakage in the neck or body.

NBC regional commercial director Tunji Akinseesin said that through an innovation by the Coca-Cola System, the new bottle has been created to further improve its consumers’ experience.

"Its light weight significantly reduces stress on trucks and roads during transportation of products. Together with the new full-depth case packaging, it also offers a longer lifespan in trade, because it is tougher, 40% more durable and less vulnerable to breakage and scuffing compared to the regular bottle," Akinseesin added.

Coca-Cola introduced the Ultra bottles globally in 2000, and initially rolled them out in June 2011 in Nigeria.
