Austria-based packaging firm Constantia Flexibles Group has joined the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in a move to combat plastic pollution.

The company has joined a coalition of leading businesses and governments who have already signed the commitment, which was introduced by Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with UN Environment.

According to the company, the commitment will help reduce its plastic footprint, as well as encourage the reuse and recycling of plastic products.

The firm noted that it will work collaboratively with businesses and governments to combat plastic pollution at its source.

Constantia has recently announced its commitment to making 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025.

As part of the new initiative, Constantia will work towards its 100% recyclability goal by focusing on product specifications.

It will also implement design guidelines to develop recyclable specifications, as well as strengthening development efforts to reduce unnecessary plastic packaging.

The company also noted that it will aim to increase the use of recycled content in its products where legally and technically possible.

The New Plastics Economy is an initiative developed to allow organisations to rethink and redesign the future of plastics applying the principles of the circular economy.

A total of 250 companies, including packaging producers, brands, retailers, recyclers, governments and NGOs, have joined the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to address plastic waste and pollution.

The Global Commitment and its vision for a circular economy for plastic are supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It has been endorsed by the World Economic Forum, The Consumer Goods Forum, along with universities, institutions and academics.
