Corbion Purac has received compostable certification for its polylactic acid (PLA) resin from the European certification organisation Vinçotte of Vilvoorde.
Receipt of the OK Compost logo and the European Bioplastics Association’s Seedling logo Means that the resins can now be used by downstream processors to develop compostable end-products.

Vinçotte contract manager Petra Michiels said: "By receiving both the OK compost and the Seedling logo, Corbion Purac’s PLA resins can provide a strong base upon which article producers can develop compostable products that can be recognised throughout the entire European market."
The company claims that the PLA resins based on its quality lactides deliver heat resistance to withstand temperatures between 100°C and 140°C.
These resins can be used as an alternative to polystyrene, polypropylene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene in packaging and food serviceware applications.

Both PLA and PDLA resins are available for commercial sale in pre-marketing volumes.
The OK compost label is awarded to products or packaging that are biodegradable in an industrial composting plant.
This certification is based on EN 13432: 2000 standard, which adheres to the requirements of the EU Packaging Directive.
