Developed based on an existing model created by DS Smith’s Finnish colleagues, the corrugated cardboard packaging solution will be used for shipping fish and seafood.

The paper-based packaging is intended to allow Mariscos A Ínsua to move away from expanded polystyrene packaging to a more circular alternative design solution.

This is in keeping with its commitment to ‘respect nature, marine environments and fair fishing’.

It is also in line with several regional regulatory measures, including reducing single-use plastic food containers by 50% by 2026 and 70% by 2030.

These types of plastic waste currently account for 70% of all marine litter and can take up to 400 years to degrade.

According to DS Smith, the main characteristics of the flat-packed shipped packaging are that it is easy to assemble, waterproof with an absorbent bottom, bespoke and customisable.

DS Smith said that it had developed a number of solutions to ship fresh products such as fish and seafood.

These have been produced according to customers’ specifications and requirements.

In a statement, the company said: “Due to the current high demand for this type of solution, DS Smith has been working intensively over the last few months to develop new pioneering alternatives.

“Thanks to DS Smith’s powerful network of interconnected designers, the company can provide creative and efficient solutions in a short period of time.”

Earlier this month, DS Smith’s team in Germany developed a tray packaging solution made entirely from corrugated cardboard.

The tray has two lateral automatic bases and can be assembled quickly and reused after use.
