UK-based corrugated packaging provider DS Smith has announced that 90% of its packaging materials are procured from recovered sources, achieving significant sustainability targets.
The company’s new sustainability report revealed that it has reduced its waste sent to landfill by 26.2% between 25 October 2015 and the same time in 2016.

During the same period, the company has cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 286,970t and prevented 562,686 trees from being chopped down.
According to the report, DS Smith has reduced CO2 emissions by 8.1% during the specified period.
DS Smith group sustainability director Mark Greenwood said: “Interestingly, packaging reputation and fibre sourcing and availability were revealed as two of the highest priority issues for internal and external stakeholders in our recent materiality analysis.
“This highlights the increasing importance to our customers of not only the sustainability credentials of our packaging but of the whole supply chain.

“As a result, we have rolled out our Global Supplier Standard, comprising our minimum requirements for quality and sustainability, and created a Modern Slavery Working Group which is planning a range of activities to respond to the new legislation.”
The newly released report also mentions that DS Smith Recycling has collected 2.4 million tonnes of paper during the period, while a total of 30,000 LED bulbs were installed in the company's sites.
It also features the company’s commitment to sustainability in all areas of its operations.
