German e-commerce company Zalando has selected DS Smith as its development partner and supplier to redesign the size of its shipping packaging solution.

The new packaging solution will be used at Zalando’s warehouse and logistics centres to accommodate the growing volume of orders.

The company received 28% more orders than last year on its web platform.

Zalando has worked together with DS Smith’s display and packaging strategists to change the packaging design.

As part of the redesign, DS Smith created an optimised solution featuring a shipping carton with an automatic bottom, which can be quickly unfolded.

The new packaging option allows the e-commerce company to transport more cartons in a pallet and no longer requires Zalando to stretch the boxes with film for transport safety. It is also expected to improve Zalando’s eco-balance.

Zalando junior packaging manager Alex Astanin said: “So far, the feedback from the locations regarding the packaging solution optimised by DS Smith has been consistently positive.

“The time saved by the colleagues in the logistics centres during the packing process is significant.”

He also added that the company is planning to introduce the new shipping cartons successively in all locations.

The move is expected to save more than 200 truckloads and 370,000m² of film annually.

Zalando packaging management lead Uwe Streiber said: “Zalando wants to become the leading platform for sustainable fashion in Europe. For us, packaging is a strategic topic with great potential for brand building.

“To achieve our goals, we work closely with partners such as DS Smith, who support us with their packaging expertise in developing sustainable solutions and guarantee consistently high quality in production, even with large quantities and short delivery times.”
