Taiwan-based papermaking and printing group E Ink Holdings has collaborated with smartphone manufacturer HTC and pharmaceutical packaging solution provider Palladio Group to develop smart packaging label for internet of things (IoT) based healthcare services.

The three companies will work together to reduce medication non-adherence, which is a common issue contributing to poor patient outcomes and declining healthcare resources.

As part of the collaboration, E Ink has developed a smartphone-based packaging label that displays various personalised content related to a patient’s medication.

The displayed contents, such as barcode, quick response (QR) code, multi-language text message and graphics, can be used in the packaging label as a communication interface.

"Our artificial intelligence technology is the backbone of the platform, aiming to improve treatment effectiveness."

HTC’s medication management software, developed as part of the partnership, also allows real-time medication consumption tracking, symptom and side effects disclosure, and treatment outcome evaluation.

HTC healthcare president Dr Edward Chang said: “Our artificial intelligence technology is the backbone of the platform, aiming to improve treatment effectiveness and, eventually, a personalised medication solution in the near future.”

By using the software, patients will be able to receive detailed information about their health status from the healthcare team and can refill their prescription through the software platform.

E Ink’s smart packaging label is also compatible with many wireless communication protocols, including BLE, WiFi, ZigBee and others.

Last October, Palladio Group and E Ink had jointly launched an advanced packaging solution, PhutureMed, to pack pharmaceutical products.
