Flex Americas, a subsidiary of India-based flexible packaging provider Uflex, has developed Flexaloxprotecttm F-PGX, the thinnest polyethylene terephthalate (PET) aluminium oxide (ALOx) polyester film.

Developed at the company’s facility in Mexico, the 9.5μm transparent film features good barrier properties for oxygen and water vapour.

The Flexaloxprotecttm F-PGX is 24% lighter than its 12.5μm variant and around 60% lighter than the 23.5μm variant.

"The ALOx, when deposited on clean film surface, offers a very high barrier against oxygen and water vapour transmission."

The down-gauged film can be reverse printed and laminated with a sealing substrate.

Uflex technical service and new product development (films) AGM JK Sharma said: “One side of the polyester film is coated with aluminium oxide in a special metalliser where aluminium metal is thermally evaporated and reacted with oxygen under high vacuum conditions to achieve its oxide.

“The ALOx, when deposited on clean film surface, offers a very high barrier against oxygen and water vapour transmission simultaneously giving excellent clarity and transparency to the film.”

The company said that Flexaloxprotecttm F-PGX films can be used in two-ply structures and in multi-layered laminates.

Compliant with European Commission (EC) and US FDA regulations, the film can also be used to produce laminates for packing dried meat, snacks, confectionery, cheese, baked goods, drinks, and pharmaceutical and medical products.

Last month, Uflex stated that it had developed bi-axially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET), flexpettm and flexmetprotecttm (Grade F-AMF) films at its manufacturing facility in Poland.
