Germany’s Gerresheimer has installed new robotic packing arms at its pharmaceutical glass packaging plants in Essen and Lohr.
With the installation, the company aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of packing operations at both plants.

Gerresheimer Essen general manager Dr Jürgen Unruh said: “Innovative automated processes are safeguarding the future of our plants and improving the quality of our products.”
The newly installed robotic arms will be used to pack shrink-wrapped glass bottles, produced at Gerresheimer’s Essen and Lohr facility.
The automatic packaging process is expected to prevent re-contamination of the glass bottles by moving them directly from the annealing oven to the clean room.
It will also minimise germs and particles on the shrink wrapped bottles, which are packaged and palletised to prevent damage during transportation.

By GlobalDataGerresheimer used to transport pallets manually, but the newly installed automated process has reduced errors and made transportation easier.
The company further noted that out of Gerresheimer's 1,500 different packing formats, 1,000 can be implemented by the new safe pack machine.
Gerresheimer also plans to install a camera system that will perform continuous visual inspections to ensure the stability and quality of the packing formats.
With plants in Europe, North and South America and Asia, the company currently produces insulin pens, inhalers, pre-fillable syringes, vials, ampoules, bottles and containers for pharmaceuticals and cosmetic packaging products.
