Korean Industrial conglomerate Hyosung Group has initiated a new project to increase polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling.

The initiative, ‘Restoration to be Reborn’,  is an eco-friendly resource circulation project.

It seeks to promote a resource circulation system in Jeju Island. In addition, the project is expected to create a rise in recyclable items’ usage throughout the country.

Hyosung Group chairman Cho Hyun-joon is leading the project.

The project is part of Cho’s plans to growing eco-friendly businesses, which also includes ones for the recyclable and low-carbon materials.

The company signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Environment, Jeju Special Self-governing Province, Jeju Province Development and Pleats Mama.

Under this agreement, Jeju Province Development will collect discarded Samdasoo PET bottles for recycling in the island.

Hyosung TNC will leverage the recycled the PET bottles to create regen jeju, a recycled fibre, using polyester chips, which will be used in manufacturing eco-friendly bags.

Last year, the company partnered with an eco-friendly fashion start-up Pleats Mama to develop the new design bags using regen.

The use of knitting method for Pleats Mama bags does not result in fabric waste or leftover pieces as no cutting and sew up are involved.

Pleats Mama is set to introduce new bags manufactured from recycled regen jeju fibre at the Environment Day ceremony on 5 June.
