US-based beverage development company Imbibe has partnered with metal packaging supplier Ball to use the latter’s Widget Inside can technology for the development of nitrogen-infused beverages.

Ball’s Widget Inside aluminum beverage can is designed to offer improved nitro-draft experience in an on-the-go format to consumers.

The partnership will allow Imbibe to develop products that will benefit from the functional, textural, and taste characteristics offered by Ball’s technology.

Ball marketing director Melanie Virreira said: “The widget continues to grow as craft beer and coffee take full advantage of the effects of the controlled nitrogen release in the can provided by the widget technology.

“Now, with the partnership with Imbibe, we can start innovating around formulations that transform into new-to-world beverage drinking experiences.”

“The widget continues to grow as craft beer and coffee take full advantage of the effects of the controlled nitrogen release in the can provided by the widget technology.”

Imbibe expects to increase the development of nitrogen-infused beverages, whose demand has grown considerably in the past year, with the production of cold brew coffee up by 172% year-over-year.

Imbibe chief commercial officer Andy Dratt said: “We’re excited to develop products that introduce the next generation of nitro-infused beverages to brands, and ultimately to consumers.

“Nitrogen-infusions add complexity to a product without adding calories, which is especially appealing to health-conscious consumers.”

The companies expect a potential expansion of the nitrogen-infused product’s concept to other categories such as tea, protein water and juice.
