India’s Union environment minister, Bhupender Yadav, has launched the ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’ campaign, a step towards combating plastic pollution across the country.

The campaign, part of the government’s broader Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) initiative, seeks to engage citizens in adopting eco-friendly habits and reducing plastic waste.

Key thrust areas of the campaign focus on educating the public about the dangers of plastic waste, reducing plastic usage, enhancing waste management, and fostering the development of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

It aligns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

The nationwide mobilisation will involve various stakeholders, including ministries within state and national governments, local bodies, educational institutions, civil society organisations, and community groups.

The campaign will utilise diverse engagement methods such as social media campaigns, competitions, marathons, and clean-up drives in public spaces.

Additionally, the campaign will feature workshops, webinars, and educational activities to promote sustainable practices and support lasting behavioural change. Stakeholders are encouraged to align their activities with the campaign’s objectives and report their contributions via the government’s ‘Meri LiFE’ portal.

Yadav said on a social media post: “In the run-up to #WorldEnvironmentDay, @moefcc has launched a nationwide mass mobilisation campaign against plastic pollution today.

“The campaign ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’ aims to nudge citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives as envisioned by PM [prime minister] Shri @narendramodi ji under Mission LiFE. Let’s move from awareness to action collectively by embracing sustainable living and #EndPlasticPollution.”
