Global quality and safety solutions provider Intertek has announced the expansion of its film and flexible polymer testing services at Pittsfield in Massachusetts, US.

The company wants to provide engineers and scientists with better understanding of the permeation characteristics of material and their responses to external stimuli such as moisture, temperature and humidity.

The expansion of Intertek’s testing services will enable manufacturers to better understand the physical and mechanical properties of packaging materials.

Manufacturers will also be better able to meet applicable requirements including ASTM 3985 for oxygen barrier resistance, and ASTM F1249 for water vapour transmission rate.

Intertek Pittsfield director James Galipeau said that the investment in testing equipment would help the company to provide better services to its clients.

"Listening to our customers and closely monitoring industry trends allows us to provide the services that help manufacturers be more successful," Galipeau added.

The company has also installed new flexible polymer packaging equipment for offering Gelbo Flex, hot tack and package burst / creep testing to evaluate end-use seams and heat seals.

Further, Intertek installed the new Mocon Permatran 33/3 MG Plus permeation equipment for measuring water vapour transmission rate data. The data is useful for applications including quantifying the breathability of clothing, barrier protection of building materials, and determining the shelf life of packaging.
