Global paper and packaging company International Paper (IP) has proposed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 and use 15% less energy, as part of its sustainability goals.

The company plans to achieve the reductions by increasing manufacturing efficiencies and exploring new technologies.

IP vice -presiden of environment, health, safety and sustainability David Kiser said that in the last five years the company has been able to reduce the energy usage by 12%.

IP plans to announce its goals further to the recognition it received from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders programme for achieving voluntary fossil fuel greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 40% between 2000 and 2010.

The company has manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa.
