Converged industrial packaging (IP) solutions distributor Mayflex has committed to reducing plastic packaging for the consumer goods distribution.

The move follows the successful implementation of plastic-free packaging for the company’s Excel infrastructure product range last month.

Mayflex noted that the new commitment is part of its continuous focus on introducing environmentally friendly replacements for most of the packaging used daily.

Mayflex chief operations officer Andy Cooper said: “Everyone is tremendously aware of the damage that plastic has on the environment and by making these simple changes, we can continue with our mission to lead the way in our industry to remove as much single-use plastic from the supply chain as possible.

“To effectively contribute to the protection of the ecosystem, Mayflex relies on its customers and the workforce’s principles and integrity.

“If we can actively support both groups to make the choices that help them to reduce waste to landfill, save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, then we are giving them the option of working with a distribution partner that cares and can make a difference.”

Mayflex will initially replace the plastic bubble wrap with cardboard alternative and standard tape with a paper version. Similarly, plastic bubble packaging will be replaced with corrugated recycled paper tubing.

The cable winding service has utilised corrugated cardboard covering instead of plastic wrapping. Customers can use the service free of charge.

Specialist support services team has replaced plastic bubble bags with brown paper bags to despatch grid outlet position (GOP) boxes and protect cassettes located at the end of all pre-terminated copper looms.

Cooper further added: “This is by no means the last of the modifications that Mayflex will be implementing throughout all areas of its operation. We will continue to source suitable alternatives to plastic until we can eradicate its use from our business model.”

In July, Mayflex issued each of its office-based staff with a refillable metal water bottle and branded China mug in an effort to reduce waste and support the environment.
