The QR codes are included on pallet and reel labels for all volumes delivered to customers.

These codes guide customers to an app that offers detailed information about the different packaging materials used throughout the logistics chain. This information helps customers identify the correct recycling methods for each packaging component.

Metsä Board’s initiative is designed to streamline recycling processes and minimise waste sent to landfills.

Metsä Board Product Safety specialist Isto Hongisto said: “The implementation of the new recycling QR codes on our paperboard deliveries stems from a strong commitment to sustainability and customer convenience.

“Recycling can sometimes be complex, and our goal is to make it as seamless and straightforward as possible for our customers.”

Metsä Board’s new recycling initiative reflects its continued commitment to sustainability and innovation.

All paperboard deliveries by the company since this month have had QR codes visible on the packaging.

In addition to this initiative, Metsä Board recently announced a €60m ($64m) investment to upgrade its Simpele, Finland, folding boxboard mill in the second half of 2025.

The investment will include upgrades to the site’s predrying section and a new, advanced coating section on the production line. The aim is to enhance product quality and production efficiency while also reducing carbon footprint.

Metsä Board has also created a new lightweight, multipurpose packaging solution for the Finnish cosmetics brand HejBuddy.
