Beverage manufacturer Nestlé Waters North America has started adding a new recycling instruction, How2Recyle, to the labels on half-litre bottles of all its major brands based in the US.

Under the initiative, the company is adding new recycling instruction labels on purified water brand, Nestlé Pure Life, and its spring water brands portfolio that includes Poland Spring, Deer Park, Ice Mountain, Zephyrhills, Ozarka and Arrowhead.

The company expects to complete the entire roll out by September this year.

How2Recycle label was first created in 2012 by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a collaborative that includes businesses, educational institutions and government agencies to address the issue of unclear and incorrect labelling on bottles that complicates recycling.

"When caps are replaced on bottles that go through the recycling stream, it’s less likely that they will fall through recyclers’ equipment and be discarded."

To date, more than 65 brands have adopted the How2Recycle label.

Sustainable Packaging Coalition How2Recycle official Kelly Cramer said: “We cannot overstate the environmental importance of the ‘Empty & Replace Cap’ instruction on these bottles; it means fewer loose caps will have the potential to get into our waterways and oceans.

“Importantly, it also helps ensure that the caps will be recycled. That’s because when caps are replaced on bottles that go through the recycling stream, it’s less likely that they will fall through recyclers’ equipment and be discarded.”

Most of the brands with the new label are expected to hit store shelves from this month, while How2Recycle label will begin appearing on certain Arrowhead half-litre bottles from next month.

Nestlé Waters North America chief sustainability officer Nelson Switzer said: “By adopting the How2Recycle label, millions of consumers will now have a clear and consistent recycling guide on the side of the bottle – driving recovery of the bottle and a reduction in environmental impact.”

How2Recycle is a US-based standardised labelling system that provides recyclability information on the package to consumers.

The labelling system is printed on a variety of products including beverages, toys, baby products, pet care products and condiments.
