Tetra Pak

Swedish multinational food packaging and processing company Tetra Pak has secured platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its Chakan, Pune packaging material facility that opened in May 2013.

The €120m facility was designed to address growing demand for the company’s processing and packaging solutions across India, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The certification was given based on an assessment of the site in six categories: sustainability, water conservation, energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, material conservation and innovation.

The site has undergone various initiatives to transform into an environmentally sustainable site, such as the installation of solar panels, rainwater harvesting, re-use of waste water, and air conditioning from the waste heat of generators.

Tetra Pak South Asia markets managing director Kandarp Singh said that the Chakan facility is an example of generating sustainable growth for customers with minimum environmental impact.

"The platinum certification validates our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable efforts in making the Chakan facility a green site," added Singh.

The plant is spread over 45 acres, and houses a straw production unit, a processing systems workshop, a renovated filling machine and a technical training academy. It will eventually house a product development and innovation centre with a laboratory, a pilot processing plant and a packaging plant.

The facility has doubled the company’s packaging material production capacity to 8.5 billion packages annually, and has the potential to increase it to 16 billion packages.
