US-based packaging materials provider Avery Dennison has announced plans to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by at least 3% every year between now and 2025.

The latest goal was announced in Avery Dennison’s new sustainability report which stated that the company cut its emissions indexed to net sales by 15% based on a 2005 baseline between 2010 and 2015.

Avery Dennison chairman and chief executive officer Dean Scarborough said: "Cutting emissions while still growing as a company is the defining business challenge of the 21st century.

"By using the 3% solution, developed by World Wildlife Fund and Carbon Disclosure Project, as the basis of our approach, we expect to reduce emissions by a minimum of 26% by 2025."

The company identified various methods to use energy efficiently in order to achieve the reduction.

In order to meet the new goal, Avery Dennison is exploring options such as the inclusion of renewable energy sources and fuel switching.

In its sustainability report, the company also announced its proposal to develop a paper supply with 100% certified origins as sustainable and cut landfill waste by 95%.

Avery Dennison also aims to reduce waste from its label products by 70% and decrease environmental impact by ensuring that 70% of purchased film and chemicals conform to its environmental and social guiding principles.

The company aims to grow revenues from sustainability-driven products and services by using innovation in sustainability.

Avery Dennison said it is on track to meet all of its original sustainability goals that were announced in 2010.

In July, the company collaborated with Vogue International and WS Packaging Group to reduce the environmental impacts of pressure-sensitive labels on packaging.

Using Avery Dennison’s lifecycle-based environmental performance assessment tool Greenprint methodology, an evaluation was conducted to show the use of thinner label materials will reduce environmental impacts.
