Brewery group Carlsberg has launched an up-cycling initiative with its global suppliers to design and manufacture improved recycled packaging materials in a bid to mitigate waste.

The Carlsberg Circular Community includes Rexam, Arkema, O-I, RKW, MeadWestvaco and Petainer.

Carlsberg president and CEO Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen said thath the group is looking to create beneficial solutions for its own business as well as the environment.

"We want to build our resilience and prepare for future growth in an environment of increased resource scarcity," added Rasmussen.

"The packaging initiative and the cooperation with suppliers represent a big leap forward. By partnering with our suppliers, we can achieve far more than each of us can do alone."

The companies will work on the concept using the cradle-to-cradle design framework designed by Professor Michael Braungart and EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung. An analysis will reveal chemicals or additives used in packaging products that would reduce the value and quality of the materials.

Professor Michael Braungart said: "Carlsberg and its suppliers are taking an important step on the roadmap towards creating new benefits with packaging."

Carlsberg aims to include 15 partners and to have a minimum of three products cradle-to-cradle certified by 2016.

Further analyses based on the first up-cycling phase will be carried out to develop new products and solutions for a resource-efficient economy and society.
