US-based child-resistant packaging distributor Kush Bottles has reminded marijuana dispensary owners in Colorado to ensure that they are in line with federal child-proof packaging guidelines.

The reminder follows the release of a news bulletin by the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue. The bulletin provides a stern warning to dispensaries that all retail marijuana stores and medical marijuana centres must be in compliance with packaging rules without exception, particularly concentrating on child-resistant packaging.

Many dispensary owners find that bottles which are supposedly child resistant have not passed state-approved testing as established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The bottles do not comply with the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). They are also not made with FDA-approved materials.

Kush Bottles COO Nicholas Kovacevich said that cheap China-made bottles contain inferior materials that do not meet ASTM and CPSC standards.

"It is incumbent upon the dispensary owner to know whether or not their packaging meets government standards. The penalties for using unapproved packaging are quite severe," Kovacevich added.

The bulletin states that a violation of packaging rules is considered to affect public safety and can result in severe sanctions against marijuana licenses.
