Sensitech’s study conducted in April 2014 found that the new containers enable the eggs to be cooled ten times faster when compared with other corrugated cardboard.

The study was conducted at Cal-Maine’s facility in Chase, Kansas. Cal-Maine is the largest producer and distributor of fresh shell eggs in the US.

The company said that the faster eggs are cooled, the better their quality, because eggs begin to deteriorate the moment they are laid.

North Carolina State University Prestage Department of Poultry Science professor Kenneth E. Anderson Ph.D said: "Egg deterioration begins with moisture loss and the release of CO2 into the surrounding air.

Tosca claims that the new RPC containers also provide other benefits, such as better egg protection and better ventilation of the packed eggs.

Tosca president Eric Frank said: "Tosca has a history of innovation dating back more than 50 years and our new egg container is evidence that we continue to develop smarter solutions that drive customer value.
