UK-based packaging provider Parkside has designed compostable packaging for health food wholesaler Mintons.
The pack will replace Mintons’ existing non-recyclable plastic packaging used for its healthy food range, which includes pulses, beans, cereals and dried fruits.
It features an enhanced oxygen barrier technology designed to extend the products’ shelf life.
The packaging is designed to decompose within 26 weeks in a home composting atmosphere and is safe to be used as food packaging.
Mintons managing director Roger Watkins said: “We are a healthy foods brand and our customers are environmentally conscious, so it makes sense that we progress our business model by adopting sustainable packaging for our products.
“The pack created by Parkside has aligned a significant portion of our offering to both our business and consumer ethos.
“Parkside are industry-leaders in sustainable packaging, so they were always our go-to partner for this venture.”
Mintons’ new health range packaging complies with eco-toxicity and other criteria of EN 13432, the European standard for compostable and biodegradable packaging.
Cellulose film manufacturer Futamura provided the duplex compostable laminate used in the pack.
Based in Yorkshire, Parkside currently has more than 20 accredited home and industrial compostable structures.
The company said it has spent more than eight years researching and developing compostable laminates.
Parkside new business development manager Paul Lenihan said: ”Consumer concerns have shifted a lot throughout the pandemic, but sustainability has remained at the forefront of their minds, particularly in the health foods sector.
“It’s great that Mintons has turned its attention to its packaging and that our sustainable packaging portfolio fits intrinsically with their goals.”
In October last year, Parkside partnered with UK-based boutique chocolate company Dirty Cow to develop compostable packaging as part of Dirty Cow’s sustainability efforts.
Dirty Cow is using the packaging for its vegan and dairy-free ‘Messy’ chocolate bar range.
