Swiss packaging firm Permapack has selected Esko’s WebCenter and Automation Engine platforms to improve processes within packaging production.

The company invested around Sfr7m ($7.1m) to develop a digital centre of excellence and expand the flexible packaging production lines at its site in Rorschach.

Permapack flexible packaging managing director Markus Wirth said: "We were looking for a solution to cope with the rapid growth in the number of smaller, shorter-run jobs being produced with the digital printing technologies we invested in last year.

“As we had been using ArtPro, Nexus and a CDI Spark 4835 platesetter with inline UV for some time, augmenting our infrastructure with a solution from Esko was virtually automatic.”

Automation Engine is a modular workflow server that automates all projects and processes in prepress.

The platform enables printing professionals to address the daily challenges by enhancing the quality, reducing the likelihood of errors and lowering process costs. It can be incorporated into any business system.

WebCenter is a web-based platform for packaging management and can be used to manage all work processes, packaging specifications, approval cycles, text contents and digital resources.

It enables users to manage their projects reliably, as well as check, comment on and approve documents.

"The company invested around Sfr7m ($7.1m) to develop a digital centre of excellence and expand the flexible packaging production lines at its site in Rorschach."

The platform also allows to save the project’s packaging objects such as graphics, print templates, logos, images, 3D drafts with finishing effects and other packaging elements in a database and insert into the layout.

According to Permapack, JDF-based integration with the job entry system Theurer C3 combines all work processes from the customer to sales through to production in a comprehensive process management solution.

Theurer C3 is an ERP / MIS trade software solution for the printing and packaging industry.

In-house print shop, including 77 conventional printing units and HP Indigo’s two digital printing systems, can produce labels, tubular laminates, sachets, bags, films and wrap-around labels.
