Every purchase of the new cup will include a contribution from the supply chain that will be directly invested to fund the development of a collection and recycling system that will aim to procure all circulating cups by Plastico.

The company expects that following the initial investment, the solution will become self-funding as it moves from a linear to a more circular model.

“We see real value in these used materials and have a responsibility to put in place closed loop schemes that transform these assets in a number of innovative ways.”

Plastico UK and European sales head John Reeves said: “We see real value in these used materials and have a responsibility to put in place closed loop schemes that transform these assets in a number of innovative ways.

“This is a complex issue and difficult to execute industry-wide. This is why we have partnered with Closed Loop Environmental Solutions who have a proven capability in designing and implementing customer and market programmes, and with particular expertise in recycling plastic bottles and paper cups.”

The reclaimed material from the ‘Closed Loop’ cup will initially be used in making non-food related plastic products.

In future, the company intends to use the recycled material for its catering product range.

The move is expected to reduce the dumping of single-use plastics into the landfill or getting into the rivers and oceans, causing significant environmental damage.

Plastico recently invested £5m in its UK-based manufacturing facilities in a bid to fulfil its future growth plans by increasing their capacity and decreasing overall carbon footprint.
