Plastipak Italia Preforme has entered into an exclusive partnership with Garbo to develop industrial scale polyethylene terephthalate (PET) chemical recycling.

Italy-based Garbo is involved in the purification of high value added materials, including bis-hydroxy-ethylene-terephthalate (BHET) from PET chemical recycling. It also developed ChemPET, a chemical recycling process, in collaboration with the University of Modena and Bologna.

The new partnership aims to use PET chemical recycling in preform and bottle applications.

Additionally, Plastipak will utilise Garbo’s chemical recycling technologies to support expansive recycling and sustainability capabilities.

As part of the deal, both the companies will focus on expanding the collaboration worldwide.

The deal will also support Plastipak in offering sustainable packaging solutions to its customers. The company currently operates more than 40 production facilities across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

In October last year, Plastipak invested $10m in enhanced machinery and equipment at its manufacturing facility in Garland, Texas, as part of expansion efforts.

The company plans to add six new jobs to the company’s current workforce of 273 positions before 2022.

Established in 1996, the 400,000ft2 Garland facility offers rigid plastic containers for companies including Dr Pepper, PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz and Procter & Gamble (P&G). It also has 500,000ft2 of warehousing and distribution space in two other locations in Garland.
