Pregis, a protective packaging solutions manufacturer, has introduced new protective foam packaging, which incorporates certified-circular polyethylene (PE) resins.

This development is the result of Pregis’ collaboration with ExxonMobil, which specialises in advanced recycling technology.

Pregis said that the foam packaging has been developed in response to growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging options.

The new solution will serve as a more circular alternative to assist companies and brand owners in achieving their plastic circularity objectives while also maintaining the protective qualities of PE foam.

It has been created through the combined expertise of Pregis, which provided its circular design expertise, and ExxonMobil’s investment in recycling technology.

ExxonMobil Polyethylene Advanced Recycling Market development manager Ray Mastroleo said: “Exxtend technology for advanced recycling and our collaboration with Pregis are testaments to our commitment to help meet this demand, enabling the delivery of more circular products that meet the highest performance and safety standards.”

ExxonMobil’s advanced recycling facilities and processes are certified via an independent, third-party certification system called International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS.

Using ISCC PLUS’s mass balance attribution methodology, the companies were able to track the mass of plastic waste processed through ExxonMobil’s recycling process and the mass of certified-circular plastic sold to Pregis.

Pregis currently manufactures Exxtend foam at its ISCC PLUS-certified facilities in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Visalia, California, US.

By purchasing these polymers, Pregis is contributing to the creation of a market for plastic waste as a valuable raw material.

Pregis CSO Ryan Wolcott said: “We view advanced recycling technologies and the use of certified-circular resins as one more set of tools that allow us to help tackle the plastic waste challenge.”

In June 2023, Pregis announced the launch of an inside-the-box shipping solution, named AirSpeed Hybrid Cushioning Renew PCR, made using 80% post-consumer recycled content.
