UK-based retailer Sainsbury’s has replaced its glass peanut butter jars with plastic ones in a bid to decrease carbon emissions by more than 150t/year.

According to the retailer, the change will cut packaging by 882,000kg and puts Sainsbury’s on its way to meeting its target to cut total packaging by a third by 2015.

The reduced weight means that the jars have a lower environmental impact and will require less fuel to transport.

Sainsbury’s head of packaging Stuart Lendrum said that the jars will be less prone to breaking, making them even better than their predecessors.

Over the past year, the retailer has cut packaging levels by 12 million kilograms, with around 7% of packaging removed from its own-label products.
