US-based SC Johnson is set to introduce its Windex home cleaning brand bottle, which is made from 100% recycled ocean plastic.

The launch complements the company’s ongoing commitment to tackling plastic pollution in oceans.

Windex Vinegar Ocean Plastic bottles will be available for customers across North American retailers such as Target and Walmart. The company is planning to introduce around eight million units to retail early this year.

According to the company, the new product will be the first glass cleaner bottle made from recycled ocean plastic.

SC Johnson chairman and CEO Fisk Johnson said: “With over five trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, conditions are continuing to get worse and worse.

“The Windex bottle is just one of the many ways we are not only providing solutions to combat ocean pollution but taking action to make these solutions a reality.”

The CPG company has plans to launch a 100% Social Plastic Windex bottle in collaboration with Plastic Bank later this year.

“The Windex bottle is just one of the many ways we are not only providing solutions to combat ocean pollution but taking action to make these solutions a reality.”

To produce the bottle, the company will use recycled ocean-bound social plastic sourced by Plastic Bank from Haiti, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Johnson added: “The goal is to create recycling infrastructures to help minimise plastic waste and address the challenges of poverty at the same time.

“This is a massive environmental issue, and it is going to take businesses, governments, NGOs and civil society working together to solve it.”

In October, SC Johnson signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in a move to tackle worldwide plastic pollution.
