Paper-based packaging solutions provider Smurfit Kappa Mexico has invested $62m to purchase a new machine ‘PM6’ for its Los Reyes Paper Mill situated in the northern part of Mexico City.

The new machine has already started operating, and is capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard annually.

The investment is expected to enable further integration within the Smurfit Kappa Group’s converting plants and significantly improve energy efficiency at the Los Reyes plant.

PM6 will be used to manufacture high-performance containerboards for the packaging market.

The device will also enable Smurfit Kappa to increase its protective packaging offerings to agricultural and electrical appliance sectors.

Besides purchasing the new equipment, the company has also invested nearly $33.2m to modernise the Mexican converting plant.

With the series of investment, Smurfit Kappa intends to strengthen its position as a leading supplier of paper-based packaging in the Americas.

Since its establishment in 1967 in Sweden, the company has developed and installed more than 8,000 machines across various market segments and countries.

With employee strength of nearly 45,000, Smurfit Kappa operates around 370 production sites situated across 34 countries, with 21 are in Europe and 13 countries in the Americas.

Last year, the company reported revenue of approximately €8.2bn.
