US-based diversified packaging company Sonoco has invested in high-performance film core production equipment at its facility in Hartsville, South Carolina.
The investment, the amount of which has not been disclosed, will also enable the company to provide improved cores for various high-performance film markets.

Sonoco currently provides cores for photovoltaic applications, as well as medical, optical, window, packaging, industrial and battery separator films.
Sonoco US and Canada tubes and cores vice-president James Harrell said: “Many customers rely on Sonoco for highly-engineered cores that protect their investments in delicate, sensitive films.
“Our proprietary manufacturing processes for producing high-performance film cores reduce film scrap and minimise start-up impressions, while providing best-in-class performance on a consistent basis.
“This investment in our Hartsville, SC facility shows our dedication to this industry and will greatly improve our ability to produce the highest quality products for the most demanding applications.”

Featuring smooth surfaces, the film reduces material waste and spiral film impressions as well as enables high winding speeds and reduces start-up wrinkles.
With 21,000 employees, Sonoco currently has 300 facilities in 34 countries worldwide.
Last month, Sonoco Europe expanded its injection-moulded rigid plastic packaging production sites in Zwenkau, Germany, with an investment of around €8m.
As part of the expansion, the company also added 25 new employees to the facility.
