Irish wholesale food retailer Musgrave Group’s subsidiaries SuperValu and Centra are to start selling Frank and Honest’s range of 100% compostable coffee cups from September 2018.

The cups will be supplied by Irish firms CupPrint and Down2Earth Materials and will be found as part of coffee brand Frank and Honest’s products in the two retailers’ stores. They will also contribute to the creation of 20 new jobs in Ennis and Cork.

Ireland Communications, Climate Action and Environment Minister Denis Naughten said: “The decision to introduce compostable cups is a significant move that will lead to millions of single-use non-recyclable cups being diverted from landfill annually.

“Today’s announcement is a significant step that supports my policy priorities in the waste area which includes my desire to work with industry to ensure single-use plastics are eliminated.”

The compostable coffee cups can be thrown away in domestic brown bins and can be organically recycled in commercial composting facilities for conversion into renewable energy or fertiliser.

SuperValu and Centra managing director Martin Kelleher said: “As Ireland’s biggest grocery and convenience brands, we know that SuperValu and Centra have an important role to play in helping to make more environmentally friendly packaging available to consumers.

“Further to this, we are actively looking at how we can make additional improvements in-store and across our supply chain as part of our commitment to making 100% of SuperValu Own Brand and Fresh Produce packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.”

The move comes after SuperValu introduced compostable bags to replace plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section.
