US-based Tag Packaging has unveiled a new biodegradable foam, 100BIO, for the food packaging sector.

Claimed to be the first 100% biodegradable foam, 100BIO features sturdy, cold-resistant, heat-insulating, and shock-absorbing qualities.

A collection of 16 items, such as cups, clamshells and sushi trays, have been included in the new range.

100BIO is made from Ingeo, which is a trademarked brand name for a range of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers owned by NatureWorks.

It is said to reduce carbon footprints and does not contain heavy metals, harsh chemicals or carcinogens.

Ingeo is a sugar-based, biodegradable bioplastic currently being sourced from plants, such as corn or sugarcane.
