The new labels aim to replace traditional produce stickers, which are contaminants in compost facilities.

Bio4Pack has developed the labels in partnership with TIPA to tackle the pressing issue of waste management.

Produce stickers are currently ranked among the top five most persistent contaminants in compost, leading to a global shift towards compostable alternatives. This transition is influenced by both market demands and evolving regulatory trends.

TIPA’s home compostable produce label has enhanced moisture resistance and flexibility.

The pressure-sensitive adhesive ensures strong attachment on a variety of produce, from the smooth skins of bananas and mangoes to the more textured surfaces of oranges and cantaloupes, all without leaving any residue.

Bio4Life’s adhesive technology, BioTAK, complies with European compost standards and is residue-free.

The certified home compostable produce labels are designed for compatibility with conventional label printing presses and can be applied using both machine and hand application techniques.

These labels are also certified food-safe for direct food contact and maintain their durability in cold and moist conditions.

TIPA co-founder and CEO Daphna Nissenbaum stated: “Labels on fresh produce have traditionally been made from conventional plastic that cannot be recycled and are often discarded in food waste bins, contaminating organic streams and contributing to microplastic pollution.”

TIPA also offers a range of compostable packaging solutions for fresh produce. These products enable growers and retailers to enhance the sustainability of their packaging.

Daphna added: “Policies requiring compostable labels are emerging around the world, and TIPA is leading the way with a technology that will break down with the organic matter it’s attached to without compromising on performance.”
