Toppan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toppan Holdings, has installed a hybrid manufacturing line capable of producing both biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE) films on the same machine.

The installation was carried out in collaboration with its India-based subsidiary, Toppan Speciality Films Private Limited (TSF).

According to the Japanese company, TSF will begin mass production on the new line from mid-November 2025.

The facility will supply BOPP and BOPE films to packaging converters and major brand owners in the food and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors across India and international markets.

The new installation is expected to raise TSF’s overall film production capacity by around 40%.

It operates at high speed and incorporates an advanced quality management system to maintain uniform thickness, enhance transparency and offer consistent strength across products.

Toppan’s initiative supports its plan to meet rising demand for recyclable, mono-material sustainable packaging.

This demand is particularly strong in Europe, where companies are shifting from PET to BOPP and BOPE films.

The move also aligns with India’s Plastic Waste Management Rules and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations.

By 2027, TSF aims to increase its annual sales volume to around 33,000t.

The company also plans to extend its product range to include transparent GL BARRIER films – Toppan’s proprietary high-barrier brand – and to develop new films with improved heat resistance and sealing properties.

Founded in Tokyo in 1900, the Toppan Group operates across a range of sectors including printing, communications, security, packaging, décor materials, electronics and digital transformation.

In April 2025, Toppan Holdings finalised the acquisition of Sonoco Products Company’s Thermoformed and Flexibles packaging (TFP) business in the US for approximately $1.8bn, on a cash-free and debt-free basis.
