Toray said that in high altitudes, the air pressure outside the package decreases and causes the packages to inflate.

Manufactured using a polypropylene core layer and a proprietary sealant, Torayfan is available in transparent, metallised, and white versions.

The OTM films can reportedly survive altitudes of around 17,000ft before showing a leak, and around 38,000ft before breaking completely.

Toray Plastics (America) Torayfan division product manager Amanda Whaley said: “Geographical differences between the four regions of the US create significant distribution challenges for CPGs.

"With Toray’s OTM films, the incidence of bags’ bursting can be significantly reduced or even eliminated."

“With Toray’s OTM films, the incidence of bags’ bursting can be significantly reduced or even eliminated. This innovation gives CPGs the confidence to distribute their products using traditional interstate highways directly over mountain passes.

“It also opens up new business opportunities for smaller regional manufacturers, who will now be able to distribute products nationwide.”

The hermetic seal used in Torayfan help maintain the package's integrity, protecting its contents from oxygen and moisture.

The new OTM films are compatible with standard vertical form, fill and seal (VFFS) and horizontal form, fill and seal (HFFS) equipment.

They have been used to manufacture pillows, pouches, and stand-up pouches (SUP), which are designed to pack snacks,  cookies, crackers, biscuits, and other confectionery items.
