A subsidiary of packaging materials specialist Tekni-Plex has developed a new laminated aluminium foil/foam barrier liner for roll-on pilfer proof (ROPP) wine closures.

When used as an alternative to tin/saran liners commonly used for ROPP wine applications, the new Tri-Vin liners by Tri-Seal support wine aging while preserving the aroma and taste of wines.

An independent laboratory has conducted permeation tests on the new liners to compare with alternate materials currently being used. The Australian Wine Research Institute has also conducted sensory organoleptic testing.

"We invested significant resources to develop a cost-effective wine liner with the performance characteristics of tin/saran liners, while preserving aroma and taste."

Tri-Seal manufactures liners in a variety of materials ranging from nine-layer coextrusions or laminations to a one-piece induction seal.

Tekni-Plex vice-president and general manager David Andrulonis said: "We invested significant resources to develop a cost-effective wine liner with the performance characteristics of tin/saran liners, while preserving aroma and taste.

"We designed the Tri-Vin liner to perform in the correct oxygen sensitivity range, allowing wine makers to cost-effectively maintain the drinkability window for consumers. Additionally, the structure is halogen and chlorine-free, which is environmentally desirable."
