Finnish paper and packaging solution provider UPM Specialty Papers has launched a new label that complies with its LinerLoop solution.

The new label seeks to encourage the industry to select release papers that are specifically designed for closed-loop recycling.

LinerLoop is one of the first commercial-scale closed-loop recycling solutions for silicone-coated release papers.

The compatible label is designed to promote the closed-loop recycling of release papers that are used in self-adhesive labels and tapes.

Data from CELAB and AWA revealed that approximately 50% of used release papers and matrix materials are recycled in Europe, of which only 15% are recycled back into release papers via a closed-loop methodology.

UPM’s projects director for growth Jari Tamminen said: “UPM Specialty Papers wants to inspire the self-adhesive label and tapes industry to recycle release papers, both by boosting collection and by promoting products that are designed for recycling.

“The new ‘LinerLoop compatible’ label makes it easier for companies to identify release base papers that are designed for closed-loop recycling.”

According to UPM, papers featuring this label are siliconised and paper-based release liners and are free from adhesives and labels.

In addition, the papers are certified safe for food contact as per regulations from the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and US Federal Drug Administration.

UPM has teams and mills in China, Finland and Germany, with approximately 2,000 employed dedicated experts.

Last month, UPM lowered its outlook for the fiscal year 2023 due to a rapid decline in pulp and chemical prices.
