Berry Global and Nestlé Purina launch fully recycled pet treat canisters

The new canisters will be made from mechanically recycled PET.

Berry Global has teamed up with pet care products manufacturer Nestlé Purina PetCare to introduce treat canisters composed entirely of recycled material.

The packaging for Friskies Party Mix cat treats, in both 20oz and 30oz sizes, will now utilise 100% recycled plastic, except for the label and lid.

Set to be available across the US in mid-2025, these new canisters will be made from mechanically recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

This initiative is the result of a joint effort between Berry Global and Nestlé Purina to develop a package that minimises the use of virgin resin.

Nestlé Purina Expert Packaging's Franco Ignelzi said: "We believe future generations of people and pets deserve safe and healthy spaces to roam and play.

"That vision includes a future where none of our product packaging ends up in a landfill and where our packaging is not only recyclable but incorporates recycled content. This project is an important step toward that vision."

The canisters are manufactured in one of Berry's Safe Quality Food-certified facilities using recycled resin obtained from kerbside collection programmes.

The move prevents plastic waste from reaching landfills, cuts down on the production of new plastic, and curbs emissions.

Specifically, the transition to 100% recycled plastic is set to reduce more than 500 tonnes of virgin plastic each year. This change is expected to yield greenhouse gas savings equivalent to 694 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Berry Global North America Consumer Packaging senior strategic account director Nicole Pawlowski said: "This project reflects what is possible when partners collaborate to eliminate waste and develop packaging for circularity. It also reflects the effort and energy of many great teams within both companies. We are very proud of this partnership and look forward to future projects with Nestlé."

Last month, Berry Global provided customised plastic packaging for cleaning product manufacturer Vamoosh’s Plug Hole Unblocker.
