BEWI launches EPS fish boxes with lower carbon footprint

The new range of fish boxes is incorporated into BEWI's GreenLine product series.

Packaging components and insulation solutions supplier BEWI has launched new expanded polystyrene (EPS) raw material grades and EPS fish boxes with better environmental footprints.

These innovations are based on recycled feedstock and are claimed to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by up to 60%.

The new range of fish boxes is incorporated into BEWI's GreenLine product series, which features items with recycled content and a reduced carbon footprint.

The GreenLine fish boxes leverage Circulum Balance, the company’s novel EPS raw material grade derived from recycled feedstock.

Circulum Balance is engineered to enable CO₂ savings across various industries, including those that traditionally rely on conventional materials such as the food and pharmaceutical packaging sectors.

The adoption of a mass balance approach enables BEWI to improve the usage of recycled feedstock.

BEWI EVP and packaging head Stein Inge Liasjø said: "Delivering sustainable packaging solutions have long been a top priority for us in BEWI. We strive to always offer our customers innovative and cost-efficient solutions, while at the same time focusing on the key aspects of a circular economy.

“Our fish boxes are already recyclable - and are being recycled. The introduction of fish boxes with reduced CO₂ footprint enables us to further reduce emissions."

Since 2018, BEWI has made substantial investments in circular capabilities, collecting and recycling feedstock from used EPS packaging and insulation materials such as fish boxes and construction debris.

This process effectively closes the loop for EPS, reinforcing its value in the seafood industry’s packaging needs.

Last year, the company recycled approximately 27,000 tonnes of used EPS and earned REDcert certification for its recycling facilities.

BEWI's latest launch of recycled feedstock-based items brings the company nearer to its goal of collecting and utilising recycled EPS in its products.
