DS Smith has developed a new fibre-based transport box for Finnish firm Famifarm Oy to facilitate the transportation of fresh herbs and salads.

The new box features a hatch design to support easy and quick packing and unpacking. It is also engineered to safeguard the contents during transit, ensuring that the products arrive in optimal condition at retail and grocery outlets.

The new design accelerates the unpacking process, making it up to four times faster than their previous packaging solutions.

The concept for the new packaging was developed collaboratively by DS Smith cluster design creative specialist Jyrki Petrelius and automation expert and development manager at DS Smith in Finland, Veli-Matti Karvonen.

Petrelius stated: "This packaging solution was designed for an automated packaging line and is intended to enhance the business of our customers' customers, ie retail stores and outlets.

The corrugated boxes can also be folded after use, aiding in better storage within retail environments.

The packaging solution is suitable for large and small grocery operations, ensuring that the herbs and salads are protected throughout the distribution process.

Famifarm Oy CEO Jussi Loimusalo stated: “Our customers, such as the retail chains, have really liked the new functional transport box, which saves a lot of time for their employees.

“We value our packaging partner's transparency, commitment to sustainability, and reliability, and DS Smith has demonstrated an in-depth understanding of our operations, which actively contributed to our joint product development.”

Famifarm Oy is a Finland-based potted herbs and salads producer. The company is known for its Järvikylä brand.

In early 2025, DS Smith introduced cardboard trays to enable the secure transport of automotive headlights.
