Flint Group upgrades Italian resin plant to meet NC-free inks demand

The project results in a 30% increase in production capacity, solidifying the group's standing in the PU-based inks market.

Flint Group has upgraded its resin manufacturing plant in Caronno, Italy, to meet the nitrocellulose (NC)-free inks demand in the flexible packaging business segment.

The facility, which has been operational for over three decades, produces more than 20,000 tonnes of resins each year.

Flint Group said the upgrade substantially boosts the company’s ability to manufacture critical resin intermediates for polyurethane- (PU) and acrylic-based inks, fortifying the company's vertically integrated supply chain and ensuring access to vital raw materials.

The expansion improves the availability of Flint Group’s PU-based VertixCode (flexographic) and MatrixCode (gravure) ink solutions.

These product ranges enhance packaging recyclability by providing high chemical stability, ensuring compatibility with recycling processes, and supporting converters in complying with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The project results in a 30% increase in production capacity, solidifying Flint Group’s standing in the expanding PU inks market.

The move also enhances molecular weight distribution through accurate dosing of raw materials and reagents, guaranteeing consistent, high-quality products.

This investment is timely, as global NC supply faces growing constraints, largely due to the redirection of NC production towards military-grade materials, causing supply chain challenges, significant price rises, and uncertainty.

Flint Group Europe Operations and Supply Chain executive vice-president Gonzalo Alas Pumarino said: “Flint Group is committed to delivering market-leading PU solutions that align with the packaging industry’s evolving needs and its transition towards more sustainable and recyclable packaging solutions.

“Scaling up our NC-free resin production was a strategic investment for Flint Group to ensure our ability to provide a forward-looking alternative that mitigates dependence on nitrocellulose, ensuring greater long-term stability and sustainability for our customers.

“This investment underscores Flint Group’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility."
