Greendot Biopak has developed a certified home-compostable stretch film intended for use in logistics, warehousing and FMCG packaging as an alternative to conventional plastic-based films.

The company aims to replace linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), a fossil-fuel-based plastic.

It said alternative materials have been unable to provide the necessary 300%-400% elongation, puncture resistance and cling, particularly without polyisobutylene (PIB), a petroleum-based synthetic tackifier.

Greendot Biopak recently obtained an approved patent for its stretch film technology following several years of internal research and development.

The material provides natural cling without synthetic tackifiers, is PE-free and food-safe, and is designed to break down into humus within certified timelines.

The film delivers a stretch ratio of 3 to 3.5 times, or 300%–350% elongation, compared with 1.5 times, or 50%–75%, for conventional LDPE.

It said this allows more coverage while using less material.

The product can be used without capital expenditure and works with manual hand-wrap processes, as well as existing high-speed automated machinery in cold chain and ambient conditions.

The development comes as rules governing flexible plastics become stricter.

The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requires recyclable or compostable packaging by 2030 while India’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework places financial obligations on plastic producers.

Greendot Biopak Founder Rajen Bhagyodaya said: “For decades, the industry’s excuse to delay action has been that sustainable stretch film simply couldn't handle the extreme physical demands of the global supply chain.

“We refused to accept that. We spent years engineering a film that delivers the load retention, optical clarity, and extreme elongation that heavy industries demand, but returns safely to the earth. The technology gap is officially closed. A performance-grade, certified compostable stretch film exists today, and it is ready for global scale.

“We are inviting regulatory bodies, converters, and global brands to look at our home compostable stretch film. You can meet your Scope 3 emissions targets and EPR compliance without disrupting a single day of your warehouse operations.”
