The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has opened a new centre in Bengaluru for advanced education, research, testing and certification in the field of packaging, as reported by The Hindu

Spread over four acres, the Bengaluru facility includes laboratories for material testing, chemical analysis and transport testing.

It will function as a hub for testing, training, research and technology transfer, integrating AI-based testing, data analytics and demonstrations in smart packaging.

The new centre will support innovation, skill development and collaboration across industries engaged in next-generation packaging technologies, serving the food processing, pharmaceuticals, logistics, e-commerce and consumer goods sectors.

One of the main components of the new centre is its food packaging line, featuring equipment such as form-fill-seal machines, modified atmosphere packaging systems, vacuum packaging units, shrink packaging and barcode printing tools.

The facility will provide hands-on training and live demonstrations on modern packaging methods and quality control practices.

Based in Mumbai, the IIP has regional centres in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Visakhapatnam.

According to institute officials cited in The Hindu, the packaging sector in India employs more than five million people directly and indirectly.

The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), food processing, nd pharmaceutical industries collectively constitute more than 70% of the sector’s total demand.

In September 2025, the Department of Posts, known as India Post, collaborated with the IIP to bring sustainable packaging solutions to its parcel delivery services.

The agreement, formalised in Mumbai, saw the IIP offering its expertise to develop packaging that meets the functional requirements of the postal system and aligns with global environmental standards.
