Innovia Films has introduced P2G, a clear biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film aimed at packaging fresh produce such as pre-prepared vegetables.

The new material is designed for use in flow wrap applications and focuses on helping to retain the appearance of fresh goods during distribution.

The company states that the film’s gas transmission properties are tailored to regulate respiration in packed produce, which can help preserve freshness and prolong shelf life.

This design is also intended to address food waste concerns by potentially extending the usability of packaged items.

P2G features heat-sealability on both sides for consistent sealing, while maintaining resistance to punctures and impacts even at lower temperatures.

According to Innovia Films, these characteristics make the film suitable for use in various storage and transport conditions.

On the environmental front, the film is manufactured as a mono-material polypropylene product, making it compatible with polypropylene recycling streams.

The film is also developed in line with forthcoming European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements.

Innovia Films says P2G can help brands meet targets for recyclable packaging ahead of the 2030 deadline set by EU legislation.

To further support sustainability targets, the film can include chemically recycled or bio-based polymers certified by ISCC [International Sustainability and Carbon Certification] via mass balance processes.

P2G can also be printed for branding purposes, providing options for retailers and packers who require custom packaging solutions.

Innovia Films' packaging senior product manager Megan Hinkley said: “P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging.

“It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”

In March 2025, Innovia Films expanded its production capacity for environmentally focused films by opening a new line at its Schkopau site near Leipzig, Germany.
