Seco shifts to environmentally friendly packaging

The company's new packaging will be produced from either recycled PP or PE.

Seco, a Swedish provider of metal cutting solutions, has announced a significant shift in its packaging strategy, moving towards more sustainable options made from 98-100% recycled materials.

The change is expected to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by an estimated 131 tons (t) annually.

The transition to sustainable packaging aligns with Seco’s broader objectives.

Specifically, the company is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 2035 and reaching 90% circularity for its products by 2030.

Seco noted that any new packaging will be produced from either recycled polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE), depending on the supplier, and will maintain the quality and protective capabilities required to safeguard Seco’s products.

To facilitate this environmentally conscious transition, Seco will begin by using up its existing supply of white virgin plastic packaging before fully adopting the new grey recycled plastic.

Seco sustainability and EHS vice-president Maria Blomqvist said: “At Seco, sustainability is more than a responsibility - it is an opportunity to lead by example.

“By transitioning to recycled plastic packaging, we are taking another critical step toward reducing our environmental footprint while maintaining the high quality our customers expect.”

Founded in Fagersta, Sweden, and present in more than 75 countries, Seco delivers metal cutting solutions across indexable milling, solid milling, turning, holemaking, threading, and tooling systems.

Last month, the company announced plans to launch initiatives in 2025 to help customers reduce their environmental impact and promote responsible business practices.

Following the achievements of its 2024 pilot, Seco is enhancing its life cycle assessment models to include products such as stationary turning tools and solid end mills.
