Smurfit Westrock expands in Ecuador with Cartomanabí purchase

Established in 2020, Cartomanabí has an output exceeding 50,000tpa.

Smurfit Westrock has finalised an asset purchase deal for Cartomanabí, a corrugated packaging producer based in Montecristi, Ecuador.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal enhances Smurfit Westrock’s supply chain, tightening the link between North American production and Latin American operations.

Established in 2020, Cartomanabí has an output exceeding 50,000tpa.

It primarily caters to clients in the agriculture, protein, fast-moving consumer goods, and industrial sectors.

Smurfit Westrock said that the acquisition is part of its regional growth strategy and will enhance its ability to support customers in Ecuador and surrounding markets.

Smurfit Westrock Latin America president and CEO Alvaro Henao said: “The transaction in Ecuador is our first as Smurfit Westrock. It is an important milestone for us in Latin America, where we are the only pan-regional supplier with a fully integrated supply chain and the broadest range of sustainable and innovative paper-based solutions.

“We look forward to working together with customers in this country and sharing all our knowledge, expertise and value-driven innovation.”

In Q4 2025, Smurfit Westrock reported net income attributable to shareholders of $97m, down from $146m for the same period last year. 

Quarterly net sales remained almost stable at $7.5bn.

Operating profit for the quarter was $389m, down 2% from a year earlier.

For the full year 2025, the company’s attributable net income rose to $699m from $319m in 2024.

Annual net sales reached $31.1bn, up from the previous year’s $21.1bn.
