Sun Chemical has introduced a series of nitrocellulose-free inks aimed at the flexible packaging industry, targeting converters, retailers, and consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies. 

The new inks are designed for compatibility with recycling processes and adhere to guidelines set by RecyClass and CEFLEX for packaging design.

The company's move responds to issues associated with traditional solvent-based inks that contain nitrocellulose.

When subjected to high-temperature recycling, nitrocellulose can lead to problems such as odour, discolouration, and contamination.

The available products cover applications in flexo and gravure printing and encompass several lines suited to different requirements within the packaging industry.

These solutions are available for both flexo and gravure printing applications and include SunSpectro SolvaCycle for surface printing, as well as SunStrato DuraCycle, SunStrato Duratort, and SunStrato Duralam for lamination printing.

The SunUno SoliCycle option offers flexibility for both surface and lamination uses. 

Sun Chemical’s expanded range includes solutions for both surface and lamination printing, utilising a modular system based on polyurethane concentrates to facilitate a transition from conventional NC/PU inks to alternatives free from nitrocellulose.

The adoption of these inks may support converters and packaging producers in managing risks linked to raw material availability and supply chain disruptions.  

Additionally, the products are positioned as enabling compliance with eco-modulated Extended Producer Responsibility fees, recyclability standards, regulatory requirements around plastic recycling, and plastic tax obligations. 

According to Sun Chemical, these developments are particularly relevant for companies producing polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) flexible packaging for sectors such as food (including dairy and frozen goods), household products, confectionery, bread bags, and horticulture.

In October 2025, Sun Chemical collaborated with Onlineprinters on a new sheetfed process ink range, SunLit ProPace, designed for commercial publication printing and non-food packaging.
