Sun Chemical’s NC-free solvent alternatives gain RecyClass approval

The approval covers a full system that brings together NC-alternative inks and certified lamination adhesives.

Packaging and graphic solutions company Sun Chemical has obtained RecyClass certification for its solvent-based nitrocellulose (NC) alternative solutions for flexible packaging.

The approval covers a full system that brings together NC-alternative inks and certified lamination adhesives.

The certification applies to Sun Chemical’s technologies for flexographic and gravure printing.

It is intended to help packaging manufacturers improve recyclability credentials in their operations and supply chains.

Its NC-alternative products for flexible packaging include the SunUno SoliCycle polyurethane (PU)-based ink range.

The range was developed for flexographic and gravure applications and meets regulatory requirements while maintaining the performance needed for flexible packaging.

The SunUno SoliCycle inks are aimed at both surface and lamination printing.

They are supplied as ready-made inks and through modular systems using concentrates and technology varnishes, allowing converters to adjust formulations to production needs.

Sun Chemical recommends PU as a substitute for NC because of its stability, print performance and compatibility with recycling.

The company added that PU supply is supported internally through its parent company DIC and through Sapici, acquired in 2022.

In addition to the inks, the company provides RecyClass-certified lamination adhesives under the SunLam range for polyethylene (PE) flexible packaging recycling streams, including coloured PE.

The ULM adhesives range covers medium-performance to high-performance requirements, depending on the structure used.

The combination of NC-alternative inks and RecyClass-certified SunLam adhesives gives converters access to a single-source option for recyclable flexible packaging structures.

Sun Chemical EMEA flexible packaging product director Romain Cleret said: “We are proud to be among the first in Europe to achieve RecyClass certification for versatile solvent-based NC alternative inks and to provide a range of certified solutions for printers of flexible packaging.

"This system enables our customers to move forward with greater confidence as the industry transitions toward more recyclable packaging systems. We remain focused on continuing this momentum in developing solutions for our customers as the market continues to evolve.”
