Zerocircle develops seaweed-based paper cup coating

Made from seaweed and other plant-based materials, the coating is designed to be repulped through standard recycling systems.

Zerocircle has introduced a heat-sealable hydrophobic coating for paper cups based on natural polymers.

The coating aims to provide resistance to water and grease in hot drink applications without polyethylene lining or PFAS [er- and polyfluoroalkyl substances] treatment.

Made from seaweed and other plant-based materials, the coating is designed to be repulped through standard recycling systems.

It is positioned as an alternative to polyethylene lamination used in conventional paper cups, as well as fluorochemical treatments applied for water and grease resistance.

It adheres to the EU’s Single Use Plastic Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Paper cups using the coating can be formed and seam-sealed on existing converting lines without adhesive because of the material’s heat-sealable properties.

The proprietary coating is described as fitting into existing paper waste streams without the need for separate collection.

Commercial samples are being prepared for current and prospective customers, with deployment targeted by the end of 2026.

Pilot work is under way with quick-service restaurants (QSR) chains, catering businesses and packaging distributors in Europe.

Testing has reportedly included boiling water and hot coffee, with performance maintained up to 90°C.

Zerocircle identifies itself as the “first” company in Asia to be certified as 100% plastic free while its materials are described by Wageningen University & Research as chemically non-modified.

The materials are also presented as certified food contact safe and REACH compliant, with no harmful chemicals or substances.
